Welcome!

Queer Muslims often experience homophobia and transphobia from their religious community, and also face islamophobia or racism from the greater LGBTQ+ community, and we often feel stuck in between these worlds, or unable to reconcile our identities and stand proud in all of them. I want every queer Muslim to have the knowledge they need to ensure they know god is on their side. when I stopped being my own worst critic and enemy and learned that Allah was intentional in how they created me and that God does not make mistakes, it freed me from ascribing to unsubstantiated religious views that didn't allow me to live fully as myself. Even if the external violence you face is real, as it is for many queer Muslims, the first step sometimes is to get out of your way and let Allah take care of the rest.

Organization & Programs

Muslim for Progressive Values

Muslim for Progressive Values advocates for women and LGBTQIA+ rights, for the separation of religion and state, and for freedom of conscience. In advancing these human rights values, MPV provides an alternative progressive voice to these issues by participating in civil discourse, engaging with the media and government entities, with public educational forums as well as cultural events, and by partnering with both Muslim and non-Muslim progressive organizations.

The Inner Circle

The Inner Circle (TIC), based in South Africa, was established by a concerned group of Muslims in 1996 as an underground social and support group. It started out at the house of Imam Muhsin Hendricks in the form halqaat (study circles). These study circles still run on a Thursday night and have proven to be very successful in helping Muslims who are queer to reconcile Islam with their sexuality.

MECCA Institute

Mecca Institue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to expand Progressive Islam through education and research. Join and get our member-only benefits.

el-Tawhid Juma Circle: The Unity Mosque

El-Tawhid Juma Circle (ETJC) Unity Mosques is a Facebook group that operates under the concept of radical Tawhid. The ETJC Unity Mosque family of congregations is founded on the certainty that all human beings, without exception, are equal to one another socially and ritually and in potential Divine Agency. All are welcome at ETJC Unity Mosques spaces for prayer, community, reflection, and discussion which affirm and include all. ETJC Unity Mosques are places of healing for everyone.
