Michael
Heyo! My name is Michael. By the time I had entered high school anyone who knew me knew that I was queer. It was an experience difficult to characterize.
In P.E. I was shouted at in the locker rooms or laughed out of the gymnasium. Walking home would bring more shouting from men in their cars. Our Gay-Straight Alliance posters were constantly torn down or defaced.
Pronouns: he/him
But I knew the path I walked was not worn by my steps alone. I found community in the other queer and marginalized folks, a chosen family that compassion flowed through. We walked our path together.
And I knew our path was plowed by those who walked before us. The love of Marsha Johnson. The strength of Bayard Rustin. The courage of Urvashi Vaid. The incalculable contributions of every queer person who has suffered and triumphed.
Better is open rebuke than hidden love. - Proverbs 27:5
